Detox your Body: What can I do at home to help sore muscles?

When your muscles feel tense or sore, a nice hot bath may be what you need. The heat from the warm-to-hot bath water will help relax the muscles. Adding Epsom salts to the bath, will add an extra soothing effect to your body by increasing your blood magnesium levels and increasing your muscels ability to relax. Epsom salt baths are also extremely detoxifying, as they increase the body's ability to sweat.

Epsom salts are made from pure magnesium sulphate. Magnesium is a mineral, which helps to relax the smooth and skeletal muscles in our bodies. By adding Epsom salts into the bath, your body will absorb the magnesium to help further soothe your sore or tense muscles. Epsom salts can be purchased at any health food store, grocery store, pharmacy or Bulk Barn.

Add 2 to 4 cups of Epsom salts to your warm-to-hot bath water and stir to dissolve.
Soak for 20 minutes (minimum).

You can also increase your magnesium by eating foods that are naturally high in magnesium. Magnesium is abundant in unrefined whole grain products, such as 100% whole wheat bread and cereals, green leafy vegetables (spinach and kale), nuts, seeds and legumes (lentils, kidney beans, chick peas etc).

Epsom salt baths can also help prevent menstrual cramps when done prophylaxically.
